Challenge

Unlike conventional candidate compound screening methods that focus on a specific molecular target, phenotypic screening is a technique for identifying compounds that induce a desired phenotypic change in disease model cells. Its value is rapidly growing, driven by advancements in imaging and data analysis, and the use of living cells.

Effective phenotypic screening requires the recognition of individual cells and the precise evaluation of morphological changes following compound administration. Manual visual assessment, however, struggles to identify subtle changes or handle the massive volume of cells required for high-throughput analysis and evaluation.

LPIXEL’s Solution – AI Technology and Impact

LPIXEL has developed a machine learning model that recognizes cell nuclei at single-cell resolution, classifies cells into morphological groups, and quantifies the results.

This capability enables the precise quantitative evaluation of candidate compounds, making high-throughput screening possible by leveraging compound libraries of pharmaceutical companies.

In recent years, disease-specific iPS cells have also been utilized as disease model cells.
